ASTD Board Meeting Minutes

Thursday, November 10, 2005

Location:  Huntsville Center for Technology

Members Present:  Lori King-Taylor, John Hightower, Rhonda Williams, Gloria Stover, Nancy Hodges, and Cindy Dodd.

The board meeting began with a tour of the Huntsville Center for Technology.  The group met several students, teachers, principal, and counselors.  The board witnessed the practice run of the student designed moon buggy that will race at NASA as well as other specific educational areas – drafting, machine shop, automotive, cosmetology, and computer labs.   After the tour, the board met over lunch.   The culinary students prepared the food as well as the table decorations.

Lori called the meeting to order.  The October minutes were not read, but October minutes are available to members via a Nancy email.

The treasurer’s report noted a current checkbook balance in Regions bank account of $3,569.05, petty cash $60.00, and accounts receivable of $165.00.  Not all expenses are in on the train-the-trainer event.  The chapter still has one outstanding vendor payment from the Showcase.  A second invoice has been sent with no response. The board decided to write off the expense.

In Committee reports, Cindy Dodd reported that the local chapter has 47 members.  Three new members were added from the train-the-trainer event.

Communications chair, Rhonda Williams, has the November and December postcards ready to send out.

Programs chair, Nancy Hodges, will report on the January, February, and March programs in December.  She is attempting to find speakers/events for these three months.  In November the membership will tour the Space and Rocket Center and the December meeting will be held at the Huntsville Technology Center.

In old business, the group planned the December meeting.  It will be held at the Huntsville Career Center on Tuesday, December 13th at 11:30.  The program will feature six classes at the center:  culinary–holiday finger foods, graphic arts with Christmas cards and invitations, cosmetology – holiday hair and nails, precision and machine shop – yard Christmas trees, and the early childhood program reading The Night Before Christmas.  The program will last roughly 30 minutes.  It was suggested that students that are demonstrating their holiday craft, answer questions from the membership reference their specific application.  These students will be included in the luncheon.  The Center will create the invitations for ASTD membership.  Rhonda is to work with Joy (school counselor) on this.  Nancy is to work with Joy on program details and set up.

New Business:

Members discussed the 2006 Showcase event.  Members discussed the pros and cons to the following months:  February, March, and April.  Next month, the board will determine the exact month for hosting this event.  The proposals for presenters can go out now.  Scheduling blocks were also discussed, but not agreed upon.
