Succession Planning
OmniTeam

With the coming exodus of Baby Boomers and national turnover at over 20%, it is amazing that so little attention is paid to succession planning at all levels of the organization. Some needs might be met with a comprehensive cross-training program. This is much more difficult to accomplish in the technical and managerial ranks. For all the emphasis on standard job descriptions, the reality is that each person shapes a job by personality, strengths, and preferences.

This presentation will walk participants through the creation of a job model that can be used to customize a profile for identifying best-fit internal candidates who can be groomed for succession. The benefits of a comprehensive succession plan don't stop at preparedness. By itself, it can improve job satisfaction and contribute to better retention rates. It can encourage the skills development needed for the future and make better use of the talent available. The modeling technique prevents overqualification of job requirements which can escalate costs and lengthen search process.

About the presenters:  Carolyn Y. Lord is a partner in Omni Team, L.L.C., which won the small-business-of-the-year award for business services in 2004 from the Huntsville-Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Carolyn graduated magna cum laude with a B.A. in business administration from Upper Iowa University and has completed postgraduate courses in human behavior and organizational development. She is certified as a Professional Dynametric Program representative, a tool for assessing personal, team, and organizational styles.

Appreciative Facilitation
Carolyn R. Weisenberger

We learn best in a safe environment where we have the opportunity to experience new concepts and data in ways that are relevant to our personal lives and experience. We retain and use new information when we have the opportunity to reflect on the new experiences and the new information to discover ways to apply that new knowledge. Experiential learning (EL) engages people in activities that involve the whole person, drawing out inherent skills and abilities, and tapping creativity and imagination. Appreciative inquiry (AI) creates a safe environment that will support learning. When trainers or coaches practice the principles of AI as a foundation for their facilitation, it suggests that they believe in the inherent abilities of the participants, they encourage and hold high expectations, and they pay attention to what is working and when the group members are at their best.

About the presenter:  Carolyn R. Weisenberger, B.S., L.P.N., is a facilitator, trainer, and AI consultant who has worked with hundreds of corporations, community organizations, and schools to develop individual and organizational excellence. Carolyn is a co-owner of MTC Associates, L.L.C., and brings 30 years of facilitating wellness and growth for others—24 of those years in the field of experiential learning. She co-designed and patented Mobile Team Challenge, an innovative, high-performance, portable low ropes course and winner of the creativity award from the Association for Experiential Education. Carolyn uses AI, other strength-based tools, and experiential education as a dynamic framework for helping clients explore best practices, discover goals and visions, and create strategic plans for success. She co-authored From Conflict to Collaboration, MTC Low Ropes Course Facilitator's Manual, and Inspire Cooperation. Carolyn is a member of the Association for Experiential Education and American Society of Training & Development.

Developing a Coaching and Mentoring Program in Your Organization,
Lori King-Taylor

With unemployment rates low and a companies struggling with recruitment and retention issues, corporations today are searching for ways to reduce turnover, guide new employees, transition employees into leadership roles, and accelerate the development of the talent within. Coaching and mentoring programs can give companies an advantage. ASTD reports that over 75% of executives surveyed target mentoring as one of the key factors in their business success. Business Finance Magazine reports that 77% of companies credited mentoring with increasing employee retention and performance. The great advantage of coaching and mentoring programs, when used as a developmental process, is that they provide opportunities for one-on-one training, guiding, instruction, modeling of desired values, and much more. To be successful, a well-defined process, support structure, and tools are required to ensure reliability, sustainability, and broad-based effects.
