What is ASTD?
Founded in 1943, ASTD (American Society for Training & Development) is the world’s largest association dedicated to workplace learning and performance professionals. ASTD’s members come from more than 100 countries and connect locally in more than 130 U.S. chapters and with more than 30 international partners. Members work in thousands of organizations of all sizes, in government, as independent consultants, and suppliers.
When does the North Alabama chapter meet?
We meet on the 4th Tuesday of each month from 11:30AM to 1:00PM except for December. We meet at the Huntsville Botanical Garden.
What are the North Alabama chapter goals?
Leadership
1.Provide chapter leaders and members with necessary guidance to fulfill their roles.
-Review existing job descriptions for each board member.
-Finalize any changes to by-laws needed to ensure all chairs members are also voting
board members
2.Meet all of the ASTD Chapter Operating Requirements (CORE).
3.Appoint a Nominating Committee by August 2010 to recruit 2011 officers.
-To be owned by 2010 President Elect – Jennifer Starace
4.Develop August “Showcase” planning committee by no later than March 2010 Board meeting.
Membership
1.Membership chair to introduce new members at the regular chapter meetings, treasurer to
provide list after guest check-in.
2.Retain and recruit new members.
-Provide membership and meeting information to other community organizations
(such as NASHRM, STC, PMI, Toast Masters, NA Adobe Group).
-Board members to meet and greet guests and members at chapter events, including
monthly luncheons.
3.Develop a recognition program –i.e. monthly prize giveaways, member spotlight
articles, etc. for member retention and to support attendance.
-Recruit a membership assistant or helper to support this initiative and to develop
for future Membership Chair role.
4.Maintain membership database and mailing list with current information using website software.
5.Solicit campus advisors for outreach to student members, include student rate communication
(look into Dean of Education, Instructional Design and/or Adult Education). May seek support
of Membership assistant and/or committee. Consider the following schools:
-UAH
-UNA
-A&M
-Calhoun
-Virginia College
-Drake
-Oakwood
-Athens State
Programs
1.Continue to provide high-quality monthly programs and professional development programs.
-Host a “Showcase” event in August 2010.
-Have a best-practices roundtable discussion for a monthly meeting in Q2.
2.Increase attendance at chapter events, will develop a survey by end of Q2 to guage chapter
interest to drive topics/speakers.
3.Use monthly program feedback from Q1 and Q2 to help drive/solicit program topic ideas
for Q3 and Q4 monthly luncheon topics
Communication
1.Communicate chapter events and membership benefits with chapter members and other interested
persons through new website calendar/newsletter.
2.Ensure website is updated monthly with current meeting announcements/speaker profiles,
member spotlight and other relevant information, etc.
3.Ensure new website is updated quarterly with the following information of interest to
training professionals and chapter members (not an all-inclusive list):
-Profiles and photos of all board members.
-Articles about chapter initiatives with invitation to members to volunteer.
-Recommended books list.
-President's message.
-Each board member submits a book review between January and September.
-Each board member to submit an original article with assignments as follows:

F.Program Chair, June
G.Marketing Chair, July
H.Member at Large, August
I.Membership chair, September
J.Partner with Membership Chair to ensure mailing and e-mail lists are current.
Member Relations
1.Solicit feedback at each meeting with a program survey. Member at Large provides compiled
feedback to Board and Speaker within 14 days of event.
2.Share relevant member feedback around location, catering, program topic requests, etc
with the Board.
Public Relations
1.Provide ASTD sponsor kits to local businesses, to solicit for sponsorship and all relevant
benefits of sponsorship (not an exhaustive list):

-Clementine’s
-Atlas Training/Pete Blank
-The Station
-Others?
2.Publish meeting announcements in The Huntsville Times, and with local television networks
(WAFF, WHNT, etc.).
3.Communicate our events and luncheons with other organizations (such as SHRM,
Toastmasters, local colleges, etc.).
Finance
1.Have the Financial Review Committee perform an audit of 2009 financial records.
2.Complete a risk-management assessment (see Colleen’s email from 12/14, attached here)
3.Treasurer to prepare monthly statement at each Board meeting.
4.Advise members of ASTD's Chapter Incentive Program (CHIP), a revenue sharing program
using our CHIP#CH9022.
-Develop and provide wallet cards with our chapter contact info, website and CHIP# at
check in desk of each monthly luncheon and event.
